Christmas at the ballpark
The folks up at Skylands Stadium in Sussex County have found a festive way to keep people coming to the ballpark in winter: A mile-long Christmas light show consisting of more than 2 million lights.
My wife and I went up there for dinner at the Wheelhouse restaurant (arrive early and sit at the bar, or make reservations; an alternative is to get a burger or hot dog from the grill out near right field), walked through the Christmas Village and snacked on fried Oreos in the right-field picnic area before getting back into our car to snake through the lights display. The snow on the ground added to the holiday atmosphere.
As a kid, I loved when my family would get in the car after church on Christmas Eve and drive to a farm in Colts Neck that set up a drive-through light display each year, so large-scale displays like this play into the nostalgia of the season for me.
Though one difference from the experience of my youth: It’s $20 per car ($17 Monday-Thursday), with discounted tickets available at most Walgreen’s locations.
And if Christmas lights aren’t your thing, there’s an ice sculpture “extravaganza” beginning in about a month.
